چکیده

We used the FUSE (Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer) satellite to observe O VI emission along two sightlines towards the edge of the interaction zone (IZ) between the Loop I superbubble and the Local Bubble. One sightline was chosen because material in the interaction zone blocks distant X-ray emission, and should thus do the same for non-local O VI emission. We measured an O VI intensity of Ishadowed = 2750 ± 550 photons cm −2 s sr along this ‘Shadowed’ sightline, and Iunshadowed = 10800 ± 1200 photons cm −2 s sr along the other sightline. Given these results, very little (. 800 photons cm s sr) of the emission arises from the near side of the interaction zone, which likely has an H I column density of about 4×10 cm along the ‘Shadowed’ sightline. The O VI emission arising within Loop I (∼10 photons cm s sr) is probably associated with gas of ne ∼ 0.1 cm −3 and an emitting pathlength of ∼ 1.2 pc, suggesting it arises at interfaces rather than from gas filling Loop I. In contrast, the C III emission is similar along both sightlines, indicating that much of the emission likely arises on the near side of the interaction zone. An Xmm-newton Observation of the Local Bubble Using a Shadowing Filament in the Southern Galactic Hemisphere

We present an analysis of the X-ray spectrum of the Local Bubble, obtained by simultaneously analyzing spectra from two XMM-Newton pointings on and off an absorbing filament in the Southern galactic hemisphere (b ≈ −45◦). We use the difference in the Galactic column density in these two directions to deduce the contributions of the unabsorbed foreground emission due to the Local Bubble, and the...

The History and Future of the Local and Loop I Bubbles

Context. The Local and Loop I superbubbles are the closest and best investigated supernova (SN) generated bubbles and serve as test laboratories for observations and theories of the interstellar medium. Aims. Since the morphology and dynamical evolution of bubbles depend on the ambient density and pressure distributions, a realistic modelling of the galactic environment is crucial for a detaile...

Keynote Lecture: Galactic and Extragalactic Bubbles

The observational and theoretical state of Galactic and extragalactic bubbles are reviewed. Observations of superbubbles are discussed, with some emphasis on nearby bubbles such as the Local Bubble (LB) and the Loop I superbubble (LI). Analytical bubble theory is revisited, and similarity solutions, including the time-dependent energy input by supernova explosions according to a Galactic initia...

Diffuse Ovi Emission towards the Loop I Superbubble

The Loop I superbubble is believed to have been blown by stellar winds and supernovae in the Sco-Cen OB association. Diffuse OVI emission is expected due to the hot gas inside the superbubble. Our current experiment utilizes the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE) satellite for two adjacent pointing directions towards the Loop I superbubble which differ in soft X-ray flux by a factor ...

Fuse Determination of a Low Deuterium Abundance along an Extended Sight Line in the Galactic Disk

We present a study of the deuterium abundance along the extended sight line toward HD90087 with the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE). HD 90087 is a O9.5III star located in the Galactic disk at a distance of ∼ 2.7 kpc away from the Sun. Both in terms of distance and column densities, HD 90087 has the longest and densest sight line observed in the Galactic disk for which a deuterium ...
